#WSGCStudentSpotlight

September 16, 2019

Sophomore
Carthage College
Major: Mathematics
Minor: Physics

Congratulations Olivia Lutterman, this week’s #WSGCStudentSpotlight! Olivia is going into her sophomore year at Carthage College with a major in mathematics and a minor in physics. Olivia is the recipient of an Undergraduate Scholarship and participated in the 2019 Collegiate Rocket competition with the Lake Michigan Launchers.

Olivia decided to attend Carthage because of the school’s affiliation with the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium and the undergraduate research opportunities presented to students. In high school, Olivia surpassed all available mathematics courses even taking Calculus 2 and Multivariate Calculus at UW-Manitowoc. Though physics is not her major, Olivia is a part of the Society of Physics students at Carthage College and participates in the Collegiate Rocket Launch on the Lake Michigan Launchers.

Olivia hopes to one day become a STEM educator like those who have helped influence and guide her. She has recently taken an interest in the application of mathematics in space science, and, conversely, the integration of space science down to high school-level mathematics. By incorporating mathematics education into fun topics like space science, rather than simply theoretical examples, students will be able to better grasp the practical applications of the ideas they are learning.

Congratulations Olivia, and best of luck in your future studies and teaching!
