WSGC Student Spotlight - Lucas Bauer

October 26, 2020

Congratulations to this week’s #WSGCStudentSpotlight, Lucas Bauer! Lucas is the recipient of a WSGC Undergraduate Research award and is currently a sophomore studying Microbiology at UW-Madison.

High school experience in advanced biology classes inspired a passion in Lucas for life sciences. This enthusiasm was affirmed in the Biotechnology Youth Apprenticeship program offered by the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center Institute and Dane County School Consortium during his senior year of high school. As part of the program, Lucas worked in a biology lab in Madison, WI, focused on bacterial culture and modifying proteins, and became fascinated by the work it takes to run a successful lab.

Also during this time, Lucas was introduced to the important work being done by UW-Madison’s Gilroy Lab to build a future for humanity in space and began pursuing astrobotany research under the guidance of Dr. Richard Barker. During his time in the Gilroy Lab, he has investigated how molecular and synthetic biology can be used to help grow healthier, stronger plants in space.

Congratulations Lucas, and best of luck to you in your future!
