Three Carthage students awarded NASA internships

March 20, 2019

Three Carthage physics students have been selected across two different NASA Centers to participate in summer internships within the agency. NASA internships are highly competitive opportunities with selection rates often as low as one in one thousand. These internships are considered gateway opportunities to careers in aerospace.

Celestine Ananda ’20 will work at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to continue development of the Modal Propellant Gauging technology. The MPG project, begun at Carthage in 2010, is now a NASA program to develop a method of measuring propellant in spacecraft with high resolution. Celestine has been involved in the project since she arrived at Carthage and will continue the work at KSC, developing hardware designs for experiments on International Space Station, while evolving designs she developed for suborbital rocket flights on Blue Origin’s New Shepard vehicle.

Nicholas Bartel ’20, who is the recipient of two NASA internship offers, will participate in a NASA Academy at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The NASA Academy is NASA’s premiere leadership training program for undergraduate and graduate students. The Academy brings together future leaders in the aerospace industry and exposes them to the inner workings of NASA, academia, and industry. Nicholas will be working on lunar lander concepts as part of his Academy appointment at Langley.

Megan Janiak ’20 also received two offers of NASA internships, and accepted an offer to intern at Kennedy Space Center in the Boeing Design Visualization Team, where she will support the development of visualization and design tools for the ground systems that support NASA’s heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System. SLS was designed to take humans to the moon and Mars, and is in final stages of integration and testing.

All three students have worked for several years on space technology development projects at Carthage. The three NASA internships are financially supported by the NASA Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium at Carthage.
