All Stories

“Ages and Ages” is an exhibition of sculptural ceramics that uncovers the significance of clay, exploring its elemental and geological origins. See the exhibit now through Friday, Oct. 11, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art.

This exhibition showcases the works of three artists — Jessica Brandl, Chad Gunderson, and Pattie Chalmers — each of whom brings a unique perspective to the medium. Their sculptures reflect the ancient, primordial nature of clay while simultaneously addressing its relevance in contemporary times, particularly within the context of the Anthropocene.

Through their art, the artists highlight the material’s dual role as both a historical artifact and a modern medium of expression. The exhibition investigates how clay, born from the earth itself, serves as a link between our distant past and our current environmental moment. By excavating the extant medium of clay from its uncanny geological origins, these artists challenge us to reflect on the ongoing dialogue between nature, human creation, and the evolving landscape of ceramics. The “Ages and Ages” exhibit not only honors clay’s ancient past but also repositions it as a powerful tool for storytelling in today’s world.

Meet the artists from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in room 219 of the H. F. Johnson Center for Fine Arts (JAC).

During exhibit dates, the gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Extended hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. All art exhibits are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

To accommodate installation and de-installation procedures, the gallery is closed between exhibit dates.
