Engineering students learn through partnerships with InSinkErator and MTI Motion
All first-year engineering students learn the engineering process by investigating existing engineering designs. Students this year are benefiting from our partnership with Racine-based InSinkErator, Inc. as they explore the two competing motor architectures used in in-sink disposal units: single-phase induction motors and fixed magnet motors.
InSinkErator asked our students: Which motor architecture is better given the design requirements of an in-sink food disposal unit?
Professors Jessica Lavorata and Kathryn Hasz supplemented their own instruction with numerous guest lectures that provide varied perspectives and opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning. Our partnership with InSinkErator gives Carthage engineering students a unique opportunity to learn from practicing engineers about design requirements, prototyping, and manufacture through guest lectures, presentation critiques, and tours of local labs and manufacturing facilities.
This past week, Pleasant Prairie-based MTI Motion visited our courses to teach students about motor architectures as well as their design and manufacture. MTI Motion is a company focused on the design and manufacture of high-precision motors, drives, and actuators.
Through these partnerships and industry engagements, Carthage engineering students engage in real projects with real impact. Our training helps our engineers be project-ready at graduation!
