Suresh Graf ’15 helps surgeons deliver cutting-edge care to their patients. He is a medical device representative working directly with orthopedic surgeons and surgical teams providing them with the very latest tools and techniques in order to better treat their patients.

Mr. Graf, a biology major, earned the President Dahl Scholarship, the Elizabeth Mancuso Endowed Scholarship, and the Smeds Intern Award. His focus on service and medicine was present throughout college, highlighted by a J-Term trip where he volunteered in rural Nicaraguan clinics.

“Ultimately, my goal is to positively impact as many people as I can and a great way to do that is through service, whether it’s serving at my church or helping a friend with a house project, I believe that serving the people we are around is a fantastic way to help create a positive impact.”

Mr. Graf credits numerous faculty members with helping him to realize his potential by offering advice, connecting him with their networks, and by teaching him something new about their specific field of expertise.

“My time at Carthage gave me a head start on my peers and consequently I rose through the ranks at a fast pace.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships with surgeons and patient care teams, and know that I’m representing a high-quality company that’s dedicated to putting patient outcomes first. It’s truly rewarding to know that some of the work that I put in on a daily basis can change someone else’s life forever.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“Carthage provided me with many opportunities to gain a wide variety of experiences. A few examples of this would be two J-Term trips that I attended, one being a medical mission trip to Nicaragua and the other being an International business studies trip in Sweden. Both of these trips have tied directly into my career on the industry side of medicine.

“While at Carthage I was encouraged by my professors to explore many different class options and to come in outside of class and meet with professionals across a wide range of careers. Overall I think it was the faculty at Carthage who helped me shape what I wanted to do and accomplish that.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“My liberal arts education has helped me approach my entire career with an open mind and with a lot of tools in my toolbox. When I started my career in the medical device industry it was entirely self-guided learning and problem-solving on the fly. Even now in my day-to-day, I am constantly exercising my problem-solving skills by thinking outside of the box. I believe that my time at Carthage gave me a head start on my peers and consequently, I rose through the ranks at a fast pace.”
