Research Assistant with the Council of Economic Advisors at the White House
Jackson Bailey graduated from Carthage in 2019 with degrees in finance and international political economy, which helped him prepare for his “fast-moving position.”
Mr. Bailey works as a research assistant for the Council of Economic Advisors at the White House. The Council of Economic Advisors is a a nonpartisan agency within the Executive Office of the President.
“Our role is to evaluate policy through an economic lens,” says Mr. Bailey. “Deliverables includes internal and external papers, but most notably the annual Economic Report of the President, which is released at the beginning of the year.”
Mr. Bailey is grateful for his continued relationships with professors who provided him guidance and patience during his time at Carthage and beyond.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“This fast-moving position requires you to examine an array of subjects, often pushing you outside your comfort zone. Since starting my position, I have constantly learned new topics and the importance of applying economic theory.”
How did Carthage prepare you?
“Carthage was critical in preparing me for my current position. My majors, IPE and finance, emphasized the importance of interpreting and communicating complex topics. Core economic theory which was taught in Philosophical Foundations of Political Economy and History of Economic Thought often applies to my daily job when framing the scope of the question we are answering. Excel and Bloomberg are used daily in my current position, the ability to learn them through my finance classes has allowed me to be efficient when analyzing data.

Tips for current Carthage students?
“My tip to current and future students is simple: push yourself. Take every opportunity and prove to those around you that you deserve it. Those that knew me in college often heard me say ‘Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.’ As cheesy as it is, working hard and forcing yourself to be uncomfortable is the only way to grow. Set your goals high and enjoy your college experience!”
