Music and Japanese

“I chose Carthage because so much is offered here academically. I can study just about anything I find interesting, from math and science to language and music.”

Career goal

“After graduating from Carthage, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in environmental engineering.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been Music Theatre Workshop, even though I was not technically enrolled in it. Whether it was my day to perform or someone else’s, I still made a point to show up every day. Everyone in the class was talented and helpful.”

Toughest class

“Calculus II is by far the most advanced math I’ve ever taken to date.”

Campus involvement

“I’m on the men’s wrestling team, treasurer of the Black Student Union, and a member of Mi Gente and Youth Empowered in the Struggle. I work closely with faculty and staff from the Office of Equity and Inclusion to create events that give students of color more representation on campus.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“I got the chance to go on a J-Term study abroad trip to South Africa. There, I got the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of South Africa, experience incredible food and scenery, and help a disadvantaged primary school in Nkume. I’ve also worked at multiple summer camps through the Urban Teacher Prep Program.”

“I received a few scholarships from Carthage, including the Founder’s Scholarship. Receiving these scholarships means a lot to me. I couldn’t go to Carthage without them. I feel recognized. I feel welcome. I feel like I belong.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“Some of my favorite Carthage memories come from Fiesta de la Primavera. During the last event, I performed “Adios Amor,” just one of many excellent performances that night. The food and music were incredible.”

Favorite spot on campus

“One of my favorite spots on campus is by the Kissing Rock. It’s the perfect place to watch a sunset.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise so far has been how good the Parkhurst Dining food service is.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“I think my 8-year-old self would be taken aback by my chosen studies. When I was young, I was good at math and wanted to be a chef because I loved ratatouille, but other than that, I had no areas of interest.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Consider majoring in engineering if you like to be challenged but equally rewarded. The critical thinking skills you gain from the required classes become worth the stress of finishing a project on time or studying for exams. My advice to other students is to manage your time wisely to avoid being swamped with homework.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because so much is offered here academically. I can study just about anything I find interesting, from math and science to language and music. The professors here are also more than happy to answer questions, even if I don’t take classes with them.”
