Career goal
“After my time at Carthage, I hope to do research in environmental justice, which studies how low-income people are disproportionately placed in areas where air quality is worse, food deserts are more abundant, water is polluted, and so much more.”
How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?
“Carthage faculty and staff have greatly impacted my life because they always push me to keep going. Endia Robbins, my boss and director of equity and inclusion for student engagement, motivates me every day to be a better person. Professor Michele Hancock helped me obtain a scholarship this past semester. I appreciate all the help and support they have shown me within my time working in the Engagement and Inclusion Center.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class has to be Social Welfare Policy Analysis with Professor Danielle Jarvis. The course gave me a whole new perspective on some of the issues in our society, including environmental justice. I learned so much about people living in poverty and how policies within the government affect those living in poverty. It is an amazing course.”
Campus involvement
“I am a part of Student Government as the Black Student Union representative and the DEI committee chair. I am also vice president of LGBTQ*SA and environmental justice subcommittee member of Youth Empowered in the Struggle.”
Toughest class
“The toughest class I have had was Calculus II. This was a pretty tough course for me as I am not the greatest with math, but I definitely enjoyed and appreciated learning it.”
Internships or on-campus employment
“My current on-campus job as a student worker in the Engagement and Inclusion Center is not necessarily related to my major, but it has taught me a lot. I get to work with the different affinity groups on campus, which has taught me a lot about working in an office. Being a ‘hub’ on campus that helps students with DEI work or anything, in general, makes me happy. Also, being able to help plan events and put them on has been a joy. I love my job a lot and am so grateful to be working there!”
Favorite moments and memories at Carthage
“My favorite memory at Carthage was the DEI College Kick-Off. It was the Engagement and Inclusion Center’s first event of the year, and it was so great to see all of the affinity clubs get together for dancing, singing, and hanging out!”
Favorite spot on campus
“The Engagement and Inclusion Center!”
Biggest surprise so far
“The biggest surprise so far was changing my major. I came to Carthage thinking I would finish as a physics major, but I found a different passion my second year.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“My 8-year-old self would be proud that I am pursuing something that will make a difference.”
Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?
“Students should consider environmental science as a major because of the growing environmental problems that are becoming more and more serious every day. If we want to see a bright and healthy future for humans, we need to address these issues. If you choose to study environmental science, regardless of the stress you may be going through, remember that you are doing great work.”
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because I earned a Mahone Fund Foundation Scholarship that helped immensely with the cost of tuition. Also, I have lived in Kenosha my whole life and was not quite ready to leave yet. The lake view is also a plus!”
