Art History Major

Kelsey Spofford ’25, a recipient of the Highest Honors Scholarship, has had many opportunities at Carthage to expand on her art history major. She’s participated in an undergraduate research project that focused on Carthage’s Soviet Art Collection, worked as an attendant for the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art, and joined the student staff for the Office of Visual and Performing Arts

Because of her interest in museum work and knowledge of communication, she is also a part-time employee of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

“I have been able to explore my individuality through academics as well as develop lifelong friendships. Being at Carthage has given me opportunities like no other.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because I wished to attend a small college where I could make close connections with the faculty and my fellow students. Carthage also was one of the few schools I considered that had strong programs in multiple areas of study. I felt I could have the freedom to explore my options and be supported in changing my academic direction. And, of course, the amazing view was the cherry on top! I love watching sunsets on the lake each night — it’s truly a sight that can’t be beaten.”

Faculty mentors

“The relationships I’ve built with Carthage faculty have immensely impacted my college career. All the faculty, whether they be professors or advisors, have vast knowledge and always have their doors open to help resolve academic issues or to just talk about life.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been Musical Theatre Techniques taught by Professor Matthew Hougland. As a whole, the music theatre program is very welcoming. In this class, each student performs and receives constructive feedback from other students. Everyone is at different levels and has different performance experiences. Because of this diversity, it is incredibly rewarding to see all students, including myself, grow into the best performers we can be.”

Toughest class

“I highly enjoyed the Issues in American History class I took my freshman year. It was an academically challenging class, but it pushed me to be my best. I ended the class with a high-standing grade, and although it was one of many that semester, it was the one I was most proud of.”

Campus involvement

“I am a part of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success.”

Internships or campus employment

“I worked at the Call Center here on campus, making nightly calls to former alumni and donors to increase fundraising efforts.”

Career goal

“After graduation, I hope to be accepted into the Disney College Program and work at Disney World in Florida. This would fulfill a childhood dream! Following my Disney experience, I would love to attend grad school and earn a master’s degree in art history.”

Favorite memory

Carthage Activities Board hosts some of the most amazing events! I have been able to see professional musicals in both Chicago and Milwaukee for only $15 a ticket. Because of these experiences, I have made lifelong memories with my best friends all thanks to Carthage!”

Biggest surprise

“Honestly, I am surprised at how fast Carthage became my home. During my first semester living on campus, I became a part of a community that made me feel valued and safe.”
