Career goal
“I’m interested in an analytics career in systems design or in the healthcare industry.”
How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?
“Narrowing down my interests and developing a career plan hasn’t been easy, but I’ve sought help from my academic advisor, my student success advisor, my career specialist, and many of my professors. Everyone has been kind, accommodating, and willing to offer advice. I’m thankful for the connections I’ve made at Carthage.”
Favorite class
“I loved my Principles of Computer Science I and II courses. They taught me the fundamentals of programming, from computational thinking to specific syntax. They also forced me to strengthen my time management skills — coding assignments can’t be done the night before they’re due!”
Campus involvement
“I’m a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the Honors program. I also work as a departmental assistant in the Advancement Services office and as a writing fellow in the Brainard Writing Center.”
Opportunities at Carthage
“I’ve been conducting research through the Neuroscience Department with Professor Steve Henle. It’s been an amazing opportunity and a big factor in my decision to pursue an applied concentration in neuroinformatics.”
Scholarships
“I received the Highest Honors merit scholarship, which has inspired me to keep working hard! I’m extremely grateful to be rewarded for my efforts.”
Favorite spot on campus
“You can usually find me in one of the comfy chairs in the Straz Center. I spend a lot of time doing homework or relaxing there.”
Biggest surprise so far
“Data science wasn’t available as a major when I first enrolled at Carthage. I came in as a computer science major and quickly switched when the data science major was introduced. It was definitely a happy surprise!”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“I’ve always enjoyed working with technology and organizing information. I think my 8-year-old self would be thrilled that I found a way to build on those interests and shape them into a viable career.”
Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?
“Data science is a broad and burgeoning field! If you’re interested in technology or enjoy working with numbers, try taking a data science course to see if it’s a good fit for you. Even if you don’t make it your major, the skills you’ll develop will serve you well in any career.”
Why Carthage?
“I was drawn in by the small class sizes and the abundant opportunities for one-on-one interactions with my professors. I really feel like I got a personalized college experience.”
