Congratulations to Michael Hayes, who is this week’s #WSGCStudentSpotlight! Michael is going into his senior year at Marquette University with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in environmental studies. Michael was awarded an Undergraduate Research Fellowship this year for his work on creating a fast, high pressure, multi-component droplet model which more accurately models combustion.
Today, many programs dedicated to modeling combustion fail to account for the high pressures present in the real-world scenarios they attempt to model. Michael’s research project, “Developing a Computationally Efficient Model for High-Pressure, Multi-Component Droplet Vaporization,” aims to fix the shortcomings of previous droplet modeling programs by taking into account the high pressures present.
Michael hopes that the models he creates in his research will enable engineers and scientists to develop more efficient ways to use liquid fuels, particularly in aerospace applications. By better understanding the process of combustion and cutting down on simulation run time, Michael will optimize his designs to take full advantage of liquid fuels, maximizing energy efficiency in high-pressure combustion engines.
