NASA astronaut, John Herrington, will speak at Carthage College on Saturday, April 22. America’s first registered Native American in space will give a talk titled, “Living Your Dreams.”
Dr. Herrington joins young men and women from 15 schools and 11 states as they compete in the 8th Annual First Nations Launch, the largest Native American high-powered rocket competition in the United States for undergraduate students. Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, NASA Kennedy Space Center, and the National Space Grant Foundation co-sponsor the three-day event. The winning teams for the AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) and Tribal competition will be invited for a VIP tour of a NASA Center this summer. The top-performing AISES team will compete in the 2018 NASA Student Launch, a George C. Marshall Space Flight Center program.
Herrington, selected by NASA in 1996 to become an astronaut, became the first Indigenous person in space when he flew as Mission Specialist on STS-113 Endeavor, the 16th shuttle mission to the International Space Station in 2002. He logged over 330 hours in space, conducting three spacewalks totaling nearly 20 hours.
Serving in the United States Navy as a Naval Aviator and test pilot, Commander Herrington logged over 4,700 hours in more than 30 different types of aircraft.
