Wisconsin Space Conference Poster Award Winners

August 16, 2024

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee hosted the 34th Annual Wisconsin Space Conference on Friday, August 9. Twenty-six research projects were showcased during the poster presentation session.

Timothy Day, Marquette University, received the Graduate Poster award for his research on “Utilizing Machine Learning to Analyze Soot Morphology in Microscopic Images.” Day received the 2024 Dr. Laurel Salton Clark Graduate and Professional Research Fellowship. The Dr. Laurel Salton Clark Memorial Graduate & Professional Research Fellowship Award was established in 2004 in honor of Dr. Laurel Clark, Columbia Space Shuttle astronaut and resident of Wisconsin. The award is granted annually to a promising Wisconsin student enrolled in a graduate or professional degree-granting program at a WSGC member institution pursuing studies in the fields of environmental or life sciences, whose research has an aerospace component. Additionally, the WSGC seeks to support those students who personify the qualities of leadership, intellectual balance, and an ongoing commitment to improving the human condition that were the hallmarks of Dr. Clark’s life.

Ellyssa Purdy, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, received the Undergraduate Poster Award for her research on “Effects of Biodegradable Aerogel Insulation in High-Powered Rocketry.” Purdy received a 2024 Undergraduate Research Scholarship. The Undergraduate Research Scholarship supports undergraduate students who seek to create and implement a small research study of their own design.

Day and Purdy will receive a $1000 award to present their research at a conference of their choice during the 2024-2025 academic year.
